I understand the position, but I disagree. Your average general IM user does not want to make an 'informed choice'. They want to click on a link and download a client and have it be a fairly simple and mindless sign-up-and-get-online process.
Yes, but you still have _the_friends_of_ the general IM user (GIU), who are just a little bit more then general, more professional (PIU). How do people find their ways to the peer2peer file sharing toolS? You have Kazaa, iMesh, Napster,... They just:
GIU: Damn, iMesh crashes a lot :( What do you use to download movies? PIU: I use Kazaa lite: http://... Just download and install :) GIU: Great, thanks!
So, yes, I would say that the general IM user actually doesn't want to make a choice. That's why their choices are mostly made by sb. else (could be friends, could be a mailinglist, could be a forum, could be a magazine,...). At least, that's how it happes with my friends: I mostly make their choices ;)...
just my 2 cents, Mattias
