In jRoundup Developer's Brief this last week they start a series of articles on the POI project. The first article is at http://www.onjava.com/pub/a/onjava/2003/01/22/poi.html .
I think you have to subscribe to read them, though!

Option 2: Use RTF format instead of MS Word format, and then use the
JavaCC

parser generator, and an RTF grammar
(http://www.cobase.cs.ucla.edu/pub/javacc/#Rsection) to parse the RTF docs
