Fine with me. My perspective was that it sounded like little
additional effort to dump the extracted code into a plugin repository,
publish a 1.0 release, and then forget about it—immediately mark as up
for adoption. (And do not list in the split plugin metadata for core,
so it has to be opted into.) Of course simply deleting it without
replacement does not prevent someone in the future from looking up the
code deleted in that commit and creating a plugin out of it.

Yeah, if there's some interest I'm willing to help with that. Otherwise, I figure it's in the git history and can always be resurrected when there's someone motivated enough to keep it going.
