I've already understood why the build is failing. I still stand by my assessment that - even if it would work - it would be a bad idea to change the build result after the build completed - for the reasons mentioned above.

Your build managers just being 'frustrated' because of this is IMHO not a valid reason to change this behaviour.
If that's really an issue for you, you can try to find other ways around it. For example:

  • restarting the whole build
  • split the build into 2 (compile and deploy) builds and only restart the deploy build, if deployment failed
