I did a bit more testing. We can get around the browser compatibility mode setting via a <meta> tag in the document.
I also notice (I'm not an IE expert by any means) that IE has a "Document Mode" that can be configured in the dev tools (F11). See http://goo.gl/TJMhSe
If this is set to anything other than IE9 standards (as shown in http://goo.gl/TJMhSe) then the page seems to render incorrectly (irrespective of the browser compatibility mode). Please check this setting in your browser and let me know.
