Hangs from sh would suggest something in durable-task-plugin, most likely related to Cygwin, a platform which Workflow developers do not currently test. (We do basic tests on plain Windows only.) But Git checkout does not go through this code path.
Did you try using the checkout task? Use Snippet Generator to select Generic SCM configured like your freestyle project.
Is git.exe actually running on the slave according to Task Manager or whatever?
