In previous iterations, (afaik) Jsp did not have access to context or it was not apparent. The HttpServletRequest object provided a suitable solution for a per-request data conduit. Plus, if you were from a pure jsp camp, that's how you do things. I was personally bred on Turbine, so Context makes just as much sense to me. Now with MVC, we can hopefuly bet on people using the generic context, regardless of view type.
