Ken,

While I can't really speak to your problems with building from source, I'll give my 
$.02 worth.  If what David suggests is true that the database drivers couldn't be 
loaded (sorry I don't seem to see that discussion entry), it sounds like maybe you've 
been including the jar files in your OS's CLASSPATH.  Basically any class or jar file 
that I use relating to jetspeed or similar is loaded in the servlet container's/app 
server's classpath i.e. I use Tomcat and load jetspeed and portlet related jars and 
class files in the /tomcat/webapps/jetspeed/web-inf/lib or classes folders (including 
database drivers).
