I don't think the issue is the grass is always greener... Actually the thing is this. If I want to change source and test it then how easy is it to do. The more barriers to accomplishing this divert from the thing we really want to do. So I don't really care if build script is in ant or maven. I care how simple it is to make a modification and test it. However having said this I can't get a maven build of jetspeed2 to work out of the box so far. Seems too much has to be right for this to happen. i.e network, repository, maven on my system, xml config files that I have to configure etc...
I think why ant is being recommended is because we think it will be simpler to get things done with less things that can go wrong. Not because we prefer to write ant scripts instead of maven scripts!!! All I can say is that on my team we converted our builds from Ant to Maven 1 and have never looked back. When people ask me why I switched from Ant to Maven, I tell them that its because I get paid to write software not build scripts. >From my experience, here is what will happen... Ant people are bitching about Maven (despite the fact that many of these people appear to have never used it) and as soon as the project converts to Ant, the Maven people will bitch about Ant. In the end, very few people will benefit from any of it. I recommend putting the energy into the product.
