OK.. just to sum up this thread :).
All of these issues have been talked about before. The performance issue is
something a good precompiler would fix. It would just ifdef the code out. Java
doesn't use a precompiler for good reasons (makes for terrible code). The
String concat can't be helped. Use a StringBuffer if you really want to fix
it. This will remove the problem.
The IBM Log4J stuff really goes over the performance issue. They even state
performance metrics to show that the method dispatch is worth the
degredation/code quality trade off.
