I don't know if I'd let it go on forever. It might become a fire hazard eventually, KWIM? Just check on it. See if the base feels hot. You KNOW you can turn the electricity off for a few minutes and detach the base plate from the ceiling and just turn it off that way, right? and while you're in there, put a new chain on it. :) I had one break off once, but it was an overhead light, not a fan. I just took the globe off and twisted the bulb a little to turn it off an on until I got a new chain. Then I found out I had to get a whole new ceiling fixture because the one I had was so old. My house was built in the 50s and most of it was still the same as the day it was built (until I moved in and started renovating everything)
Just be careful with that ceiling fan, :)
