Lyn,
Have you done any reading on Feng Shui? The book "Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui" by Karen Kingston would give you some insight into the situation with your daughter and how it relates to your clutter. I highly recommend it.
This book was extremely helpful to me in exploring the reasons people hold onto things and the positive results of letting go. One part of the theory is that keeping things from the past can keep you "stuck" in that time and unable to move on. This might apply somewhat to your situation.
Not that I would recommend getting rid of all your daughter's things - not at all! I can get rid of my own things much easier than I let go of my children's things - and they're still at home with me! However, if you are ready to let go of her a bit you might gather her stuff and pack up what you want to keep for memories.
The book also says that when we are able to let go of the things we don't need the things we do need will come to us. Sounds kind of strange, but I think its true in a way, at least it has been in my life. Hope this gives you something to think about.
