Let me put in my 2 cents here, a bar is great ONLY if you have the storage space to house your basics. You also have to look at your habits and see if there is any craft, paperwork or kid activity that is attracted to flat surfaces. Especially if the island is on the path to another room or near an outside door. If you do not have enough counter space for food prep, it will double, and you know how you work (or your family) on cleaning counters. My family thinks the counter fairy cleans them!
