The commissioner of Juba County Albert Pitia has acknowledged to Miraya FM
that the police in Juba have done a mistake of arresting citizens last
weekend on allegation of “bad dressing”.

The commissioner said that his recent local order was strictly related to –
what he has described as – “Niggers group, known for causing insecurity in
the town”.

He said that it has nothing to do with the way of dressing.

A Police officer in the Public order department in Juba confirmed to
Miraya FM on Monday that thirty one (31) girls and five (5) boys have been
arrested following a local order issued by the Juba County commissioner.

On Monday the GoSS minister of gender, social welfare and religious affairs
Mary Kiden Kimbo strongly condemned any such action on the part of the
police against women and said that she is “totally shocked” by the
commissioners’ decision.

She said that the actions were in contravention both of the Bill of rights
and the Interim Constitution of Southern Sudan.

Numerous reports were received last weekend of young women being picked up
by police officers and taken in the back of pickup trucks to a ‘Public
Order Court’ in the Malakia / Konyo Konyo Market district of Juba.
Eyewitnesses described many women later leaving the premises in
bloodstained clothing, showing what appeared to be clear signs of beating.
