I am using 2.6.6-rc2. It is the standard kernel that comes with Gentoo. Gentoo has the 2.6 kernel as a development package, so you need to modify your mask if you would like to be able to emerge it.
As far as configuring it - I had to build most drivers into the kernel, as opposed to modules (as in 2.4). Especially sound and wireless. Everything worked straight out of the box, though - including (surprisingly) my Cisco Aironet, which I never got working in 2.4
emerge -s sources does not reveal this kernel.
searching for 2.6.6* reveals:

Description: Full sources for the vanilla 2.6 kernel treeBut I did not see a rc-2 until I went to kernel.org. Can we use kernel sources from kernel.org directly, or is something needed for gentoo kernel build besides the sources?
I do agree with your statement about building in support for audio and video devices as loadable modules in a 2.6.x kernel environment, can be challenging. I working on drivers for an h.264 (mepg4-AVC) for a manufacturer on 2.6.x

Which version of the 2.6.x ( on gentoo) kernels are you most happy with?

I just built my laptop with Gentoo. My advice - if you are doing a fresh build - go with the 2.6 kernel. Much easier with a lot better device driver suppport.... The instructions are still included on the Gentoo site. Good luck!
Yo, I'm still here. I'm almost done with building up a gentoo machine. Often, I get called out on the road, and go silent for days/weeks at a time.
I guess I'm going to follow the generic unix installation instructions this time around?
