Both. The vast majority of polling is done via SNMP though, but certain
things such as the apache, ntp and obviously TCP Port interface types
do not use SNMP.

some of them on the screen.

With enough time and skill you can monitor anything. I've setup JFFNMS
to monitor things with an SNMP implementation that could only be
called diabolitcal, no idea why vendors ship junk SNMP.

Ever used cricket or MRTG? You can get graphs like that. The reports
are generated real-time but can be historical over a time period.

Sounds like a trigger which causes an action.
A trigger matches off an event or alarm. A trigger makes an action
happen.  Actions that come with it are email and SMS. With about 10
lines of PHP you can make it do anything.

Not sure what context you're coming from here.

Each user has a profile where you can set some rights and some of the
view. http://www.jffnms.org/docs/jffnms_19.html#id2 has the table
of the Profiles values.
