Hi Adrian,

Well, there sure as hell is a downside to this Caret Browsing extension! A
totally blind person will never know if it's on or off! I know that with
enough experimentation a totally blind person would probably be able to
figure out if it's on or off, but I don't need to be wasting that kind of
time when Caret Browsing in Firefox or Internet Explorer works just fine, &
Jaws asks you if you want to turn on Caret Browsing whenever you press the,
F7 key, or the, control + F7, keystroke in FF or IE. About the only thing I
have found Chrome good for is downloading, & it does download much faster
than either FF or IE. I've also heard how much safer Chrome is to use, but
if you use safe browsing habits along with good antivirus / Internet
security programs, you can use any browser, & not be this frustrated.
Personally I think I've wasted enough time with Chrome, & I think I'm
through with it. I'll keep it installed for 1 of those days when I feel
like getting experimental, but I don't see that anytime soon. I can use the
time to try to communicate with our new roommate, my extremely hard of
hearing mother in law, well maybe not, LOL, hahaha hahaha hahaha, LOL
Take care.

David,

Are you as sure of this as we were told Google Chrome is “completely
accessible”? I say this because this topic is new to the list and everyone
is understandably excited, but I’m not yet convinced we’ve ensured there’s
no down side. I, for one, won’t commit my system to caret browsing until I
understand why an option that has been available for years is suddenly one
we can all use without consequences.

Hi,

There is no problem with turning on the caret in IE or any other browser.
Have a great one.

I vaguely recall hearing about some harmful consequence from turning “caret
browsing” on in IE, but nothing I find online confirms my dim memory. Wiki
says both IE and Firefox allow for caret browsing, but Chrome does not. Here’s
another article that seems to suggest caret browsing could help people
working together with the screen and a screenreader. Note the spelling,
which some listers didn’t get right: c a r e t:

Hi, Brian. You won't find the word Caret anywhere in the JAWS materials,
because JAWS has no setting for caret browsing. This is only a setting found
within the advanced settings of Internet Explorer. It won't help anyone with
JAWS, unless they are using Internet Explorer as their current application.

Um, probably, but what does it do?

I've always been unclear on this account, too.

I just finished searching the JAWS 15, 16, & 17 Keystroke documents as
well as the more comprehensive one someone gave the link to in another
thread. None have the word "caret" anywhere to be found.

The only place I've found anything on caret browsing in the JAWS materials
I have that are electronically searchable, and that's lots from FS download,
is in one of the files Mike B provided. There's even mention of it in the
FS documentation for MAGic.
