Hi, Rick and Kevin. These instructions are correct, but I had the kind of problems Rick is experiencing when I first tried to insert page numbers with Word 2010. JAWS isn't always our friend in this process. Here are the instructions I wrote for myself, and I hope they help. I'll also include how to suppress a page number. Note that I place page numbers at the bottom center of a page.
1. Alt-n for insert. 2. Press nu to reach page number, which may be announced as header/footer. 3. Press spacebar. The second item is bottom. Press enter. 4. The second following item centers the page number, although JAWS says "2." Press enter. Word exits the dialog and returns me to the document. In order to prevent the first page from being numbered: 1. go to page layout with alt-p, then page setup with sp. 2. Control-tab to layout. Press enter. 4. Tab three or four times to "different first page."
