Lauren, When I first got windows 8 I was also looking for an option to do this as that was what I was used to. I found that the start menu has much more on it because of all the different tiles, and that it is much easier to use the din key plus m to go to desktop and then alt f4 to shut down. Very simple and works the best for me.
