I have heard that you can use windows M to go to desktop, then press alt F4.
This will take you to shut down options.

My mom just got a laptop with Windows 8.1 and Jaws 14. Is there a very
simple way to shut down like pinning the shut down feature to the start menu
or something so she doesn't have to go to the desktop and then press the
