When I first got windows 8 I was also looking for an option to do this as
that was what I was used to. I found that the start menu has much more on
it
because of all the different tiles, and that it is much easier to use the
din key plus m to go to desktop and then alt f4 to shut down. Very simple
and works the best for me.

My mom just got a laptop with Windows 8.1 and Jaws 14. Is there a very
simple way to shut down like pinning the shut down feature to the start
menu
or something so she doesn't have to go to the desktop and then press the
alt+f4 combination?
