Ted, However, it will still "disappear" occasionally during other simple operations like switching from one window to another, or one application to another. Have not yet had it happen often enough to pin it down. When it does happen, JAWS does not automatically restart like it used to do. I must either blindly hit my "kill JAWS desktop shortcut and hear a ding, or use NVDA to get to the shortcut and do the same.
Then I can restart JAWS 16. Using the latest version, Win 7, 32-bit.
