Hi Mario,
if you search for files using the start menu, then by default the locations
searched are all the folders in your personal folder, and all the folders
included in your libraries.
You can also use Windows explorer to search for files. In windows explorer, you
can press ctrl+E to move to the search box, and search for files in the current
location. So you could set the current location to a drive, to search that
entire drive.
The search in windows 7 is very powerful, see for example the Searching section
of this guide to windows explorer on Window 7 for details:

original message:
hi fellow listers, I'm trying to find out the location (path) of a file.
I'm using the search feature in W7, but nothing is found. can someone
instruct me as how to do this?

I press the Windows key.
type the filename, a dot and extension. sometimes I'll use the
star/asterisk as a wildcard in place of an extension or letters in a
filename.
at this point, do I press the enter key? I don't think so, but maybe I
do? or might there be a setting that needs to be changed? I'm not sure.
I miss XP's file search facility <sigh>.
