   Hello @cadonna! In my opinion 1 is a clean solution and it is probably 
something we can contribute ourselves - I can try doing it in the upcoming 
days. I think 2 is similar to 3 in breaking backwards compatibility (we still 
change the behaviour of at least `newTableReaderForCompactionInputs` and 
`preserveDeletes`) just doing it behind the scenes. What is Kafka's rule of 
thumb policy on changing public APIs - one major version (x.0) where we mark it 
as deprecated and one major version (y.0) where we remove it?
