The more recent beta units will continue to run the production software just fine. Some of the earlier beta units won't be supported by SqueezeNetwork. The main change in the production units is an improvement to the wireless range.
Regarding battery life this is a software problem. We'll be addressing that soon, after improvements to the artist/album scrolling and adding in acceleration (BTW this is going very well, expect an update next week).
