Not quite the solution you're fully looking for, but I love the
PowerSave plugin.  Schedule it to power down the player after a period
of time.  You hit pause/stop on your controller, and go.  15 minutes
later (or whatever you configure), SqueezeBox is showing the clock
again.

Of course, it's entirely configured through the display on the
SqueezeBox or Transporter, so not so helpful on a Receiver.
