I've been trying it out for another project and found that it's basically just Mac programming, so it would be entirely possible to build a native iPhone controller for SqueezeCenter. I've built a quick prototype for my project that reads JSON data off a server and presents it on-screen. The network stuff is fairly straightforward and discovering servers is well covered in a downloadable example, plus the UI widgets would allow you to do a pretty snappy interface, even a 3D one. Album art would be a breeze with some really cool transitions (flips, fades etc.) The main issue would be maintaining state as you aren't allowed to run in the background as a 3rd party application, which means you can get kicked out of memory at any moment, so you need to be ready to store app state at any moment, ready to start up again at the same place when re-launched by the user. That's actually pretty typical for a phone application, so no big deal. The other big downside at the moment is that you can't distribute any apps until June, the doors are locked for any developers who's name isn't EA or other major games publisher. After then, the app could be put on the iTunes store as a free download. Hmmm...
