I just got my Duet and love it. I also had the cheap amplifier question and chose to build my own. I bought a Velleman 25 watt per channel amp for <$30 plus a cheap transformer (12V -> 25V) for <5$. I put both of these inside a 3-gang remodel electrical box and voila! An in-wall amp suitable for my dining room (and probably other spaces soon).
