Streaming through the perl server is actually quite efficient. That said, I have suggested direct streaming for local files before - I think it would be relatively trivial to implement, the reason its not used at present is that it could not support skipping forward/back, synchronization etc which are all things which are done by the server.
What do you find underwhelming in terms of performance on touch?
