Maybe I mispoke earlier ... I don't think that this mechanism is a direct replacement for the callback mechanism. Rather, it is a general mechanism for querying information about the currently loaded model. It is targeted at external programs ... Java & JavaScript. I think that it is related to the callback mechanism in that the callback mechanism (and 'show') is currently the only way to get information about the model and the state of the display.
