Tim, I understand too well! Fortunately, I'm in the reverse mode (as
you might have guessed) -- just back from Jamaica, cured of my Sudoku
interest, with all sorts of ideas for Jmol and a very light teaching
schedule.

I'm actually seeing the interface as being "hidden" in Jmol.js. I'll
bet you I can produce an interface that behaves "as if" it were a
callback -- delivering the same simple information to a JavaScript
function, but instead of that function being called by the applet, no
such MAYSCRIPT activity required. That is, all calls are JavaScript
--> applet; non applet --> JavaScript. It will require one single
setTimeout() per applet and a bit more getProperty() functionality.
Keep talking.
I'm game for doing some trial experiments on a side track that I won't
be committing. Doesn't matter to me a bit if it goes nowhere. But what
I'll do is post the results in a website directory -- hey, maybe use
the wiki? Come to think of it, this is really what a wiki is for --
contributions not involving programming.
Programming-wise. Hmm. If more than one of us is doing this, what's
involved in setting up -- is it a "branch"? -- that is specifically
focused on addressing the callback mechanism? How do side-projects
like this work?
