Interesting idea. Where is an explanation of the PyMOL format for
describing the state to be found?

Egon is exactly right.
I previously had discussions with Warren DeLano about possibly sharing the
PyMOL format for saving the 'current state'.
I never even looked at the PyMOL format, but I think it is a good idea to
try to share an existing format rather than create a new one.
