There are two mechanisms for text rendering, one "simple" and one more complex. The issues you are going to run into include such technicalities as wrapped lines, centered text, vertical and horizontal offsets, and the boxes.
What's the status of your modifications to date? Just on your local version? It would be good to get what you have into Jmol 11.7 so that I can see what you are working with.
