Yes, the full range of possibilities is quite complicated. I was 
hoping that at least we could have the simple cases of labels (e.g. 
atom names), rather than nothing as we currently have. But I 
understand your idea of doing generic design decisions.
On top of that, the interest of VRML is questionable. The more I 
read, the more opinions I find it is an obsolete format.

Yes, local only. I committed the translucency changes to SVN 11.7, 
that's quite simple. But I cannot do much in terms of the labels 
since they come out in a position that makes them invisible 
(coordinates of the text are in the hundreds while the atoms are in 
<10).
Some tests I am doing just by manually editing the vrml file itself 
to see how it looks (and learning the syntax), but not the Jmol code 
yet.
I can commit the modified _VrmlExporter if you want, so you can see 
the prototype code, but it will not work. Or attach the file to a 
message.
(That would be tonight from home; haven't got the files here)
