AFAIK backbone is not a spline, whereas all of the cartoon-based
structures are, and that is the difference.  but I don't know why RasMol
and Chime refuse to draw them for *.CA-only files - I just know they
don't. :-)  so I defer to someone with more knowledge of RasMol and
Chime code for the why of it.

I certainly agree that Jmol could draw cartoon and trace for *.CA-only
files - unless there is a technical issue.
