Works for me on Firefox Linux. Am not currently near a Windows machine.

I am not aware of any problems like this.
IE is generally very stable.

Q: Are those instances of IE running the MSFT JVM or the Sun JVM?

Q: Are the machines on the LAN or are they running across the internet?

Q: How fast/slow are the machines in question?

One thought ...
I see that you are using the 10.00 release. The prerelease 10.?? versions
are using a different class loading mechanism. It means that the applet
can get initialized and return control to the browser much sooner. While
it was built primarly for Mac OS X browsers, it significantly changes the
loading behavior of the applet.

I would like for you to try the prerelease 10.?? (whatever is the latest)
and see if the behavior changes.
