Good, so we are at the heart of the issue. OK, so it DOES make sense that monitors are associated only with VISIBLE atoms, as you describe.

I think it makes sense, and I withdraw my recommendation that this is a bug.

I suggest that anyone who is using the monitor command to draw to "invisible" atoms, as Eric was apparently doing, is probably using the monitor command for something it really wasn't intended for -- not that that is bad, just that it might require more care. Eric, is there really a reason to do this? I suggest that if you want to do that, you make the spacefill 0.05 so that there is a visible point in space upon which to attach a monitor line.

If this is acceptable, I'll add something to that effect in the documentation.
