Bob, I find this very attractive. Loading takes time when the server is not close, and that could help much. In fact, I always expected that the split of JmolApplet into 6 jar files would do that, but it seems not to be so.
Yes, I think that reduced functionality would be enough in many cases. What is probably not that easy is to decide what to include and what to leave out. Certainly, for example, people interested in crystallography features will not need biopolymer ones, and the other way round. Some days ago I placed a feature request for a pre-loader applet; that will also follow this trend. Speaking of what I do, for most pages I could live - with just PDB and MOL readers - without crystallographic symmetry - without draw and pmesh - without isosurface (sometimes) - without navigation - without the translations only if there is no pop-up menu; this only for part of the pages -- those addressed to the most basic audience-- The others would need pop-up and hence translation. > brings the Jar file size down to 695K -- that's about 58% of the full > package. I'm sure that will be convenient. If it can be made modular --decide and load what you will need--, then that's heaven. > JmolAppletLite > JmolAppletOrganic > JmolAppletBio > JmolAppletXtal Sounds OK. > Obviously the popup menu would have to be different for each -- I have > an idea to make that a loadable/customizable resource anyway. Being a webpage author, where most is prewritten in page controls, I think the current pop-up menu is daunting for many users; a simpler one would be welcome. My 2 cents. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Take Surveys. Earn Cash.
