Yes, Frieda Reichsman observed that it was not possible to "color
labels" to the background color. The only reason one would want to do
this is to make labels disappear in some frames, in order to highlight
other parts of a molecule (or network).
However, in the past, I have achieved "hiding" of atoms, and their
labels, just by coloring sets of atoms the same as the background color.
This would also set their labels the same color. However, one now needs
to explicitly turn each label off. This seems to be the best solution.

"color labels black" gives white labels if the background is black; I
understand that is implemented on purpose to give contrast. If your
background is (or is changed to) any other color, labels are black. Same
runs for white background/labels.
