Thanks Rolf,
Item B is a subset of item D. I pulled it out as a separate item because
I wanted to try to find out if the desire to work locally (i.e. either
file:// or localhost) was driven by a need for specific user data files
on a given computer.
In some cases, list posts on this subject may be confusing the Jmol
application with the browser approach (java or javascript). I definitely
got that impression in one off-list response. This users subsequent
follow-up was very helpful to me.
To be more specific, I see value in double clickable Jmol containing htm
files that REQUIRE Internet connectivity i.e they run via file:// or a
server, both approaches requiring Internet connectivity for the Jmol.
This is accomplished with iframes. When I talk to people about this,
their first response is why, for goodness sake? I think I have some
solid reasons related to classroom presentation ease and lack of server
access, but this got me to thinking about what drives Jmol users to want
double clickable Jmol Web pages that work WITHOUT Internet connectivity,
again the desire for either file:// or localhost display. I can think of
a lot of reasons why a user would want this. I was just interested in
the various specific reasons.
Thanks again for the response. Your answer to B is particularly helpful.

I'm putting together a presentation, and I have a question about an
issue the comes up from time to time on this list. Specifically, there
are questions related to running Jmol locally. Since my main interest is
small molecules, I have moved totally to JSmol, but I'm interested in
general answers to this multiple choice question:
Why do you want to run Jmol locally?
What does 'run locally' mean?
Running using a 'file://' URL (1) or also on a local web server (2)?
For other users I would like (1) but for presentations (2) would at
least be an option for my own computer.
A) I have local data files that I need to load, BUT I have nothing
against requiring user Internet connectivity.
No.
B) I have local data files that I need to load, AND I want to free my
user from Internet connectivity.
Yes, if 'free' means that still additional options can get available if
internet connectivity is available.
(Isn't the first half essential if no internet connectivity is available?)
C) I want my Jmol pages to act like double clickable applications that
do not require a server, BUT I have nothingagainst requiring user
Internet connectivity.
No.
D) I want my Jmol pages to act like double clickable applications that
do not require a server, AND I want the Internet totally out of the
picture.
What is the difference to B)?

Rolf
