Hi Otis My ffelings and preferences are changing lately (because I've been forced to), so I will reply with what I used to like and still would like to.
I may also say that, for me, converting my pages to JSmol has not relieved me from local access limitations, but rather has made it more complex, as some JSmol pages do not run locally while others do, and I have been so far unable to isolate the differential circumstances. With Java, the restrains used to be clear as to what folder arrangements were not allowed for local access. Bu local I am meaning access using "file:". A local web server in my experience behaves as a remote web server (except I find it quite unstable, it tends to choke when using Jmol/Java after a fe page reloads, and also insists on caching JS files, making debugging quite hard) > Why do you want to run Jmol locally? > > A) I have local data files that I need to load, BUT I have nothing against > requiring user Internet > connectivity. > > B) I have local data files that I need to load, AND I want to free my user > from Internet connectivity. I quite prefer "B" - "A" is my 2nd choice is the other is not possible > C) I want my Jmol pages to act like double clickable applications that do not > require a server, BUT > I have nothing against requiring user Internet connectivity. > > D) I want my Jmol pages to act like double clickable applications that do not > require a server, AND > I want the Internet totally out of the picture. Again, I quite prefer "D" over C". Not sure if there is much difference between this pair and the former one. I do not really need a clickable application, I am happy with a local webpage (A, B) As others have said, apart from my preference for stand-alone, internet-less uses, for page development and debugging the need to go to a server is a very big inconvenience --and the local server is not so convenient.
