Just about every video game out there could be connected. My son mostly
likes the sports games, but he does have some of these shoot-em-ups as
well. They ALL have the same premise; you start out at a minimal level with
some wimpy weapon, and every time you blow crap up and kill
creatures/aliens/bad guys whatever, you get points and eventually get to
the next level with better weapons, more health, power etc. and you just
keep blowing up stuff and killing things. While I don't condone them, I
will say that he typically tires of them, and by the same token I give him
subtle hints sometimes that he needs to do other things. So it's an
interesting debate - do these games provide an outlet for people (not just
kids...believe me, many players are adults), or do they desensitize people
to violence? I'm typically of the opinion that video games, heavy metal,
etc. can be catalysts but are seldom the motivation for someone to resort
to evil stuff like this sniper.
