TA DA, c Karma & Leslie M win this round! Yes, that is what I heard--That
Blue was about Graham. Suprised me, but thinking about it, it makes some
sense.
In Willy she is saying that he is the one reluctant to live with her ("he
says he'd love to live with me but for an ancient injury" so like you, the
line "crown & anchor me" seemed to fit that same relationship.
I don't know if Graham ever had a drug problem, I don't think he did. He
sure stood by Croz when he was in trouble & tried everything to help him.
I always thought the line "songs are like tatoos" is just about how once you
write a song (especially if it is confessional) it is with you forever like
a tatoo. And "been to sea before" could be about her having a previous
relationship (with Croz who was a sailor) & not wanting to go the same way
again.
To me, in Blue, it doesn't sound like she is talking to someone with a drug
problem, rather that she is talking in general about how drugs were so
prevelant in the culture.
There aren't really enough clues to pin this one down unless its true that
Blue is Nash's nickname.

My conflicted understanding is that "Blue" was written about Graham Nash,
because of reading somewhere that "Blue" was Nash's nickname and the line,
"You know I've been to sea before, crown and anchor me or let me sail away"
was Joni's ultimatum to Nash for marriage. I've never been able to
reconcile that interpretation having been given,"we don't need no piece of
paper from the city hall keeping us tied and true" just three tracks
previously.
There's a tragic vein (no pun intended) that begins around here concerning
heroin addiction, "songs are like tatoos","underneath the skin an empty
space to fill in", "acid booze and ass, needles guns and grass", and later
more overtly as "Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire." I don't know if Nash,
like Taylor had this demon to contend with and I don't know much about David
Blue, but this may turn out to be a continuing mystery. And I'm okay with
that.

At first I thought you were referring to Crosby and now with the Woman
Of Heart & Mind hint, "...you come to me like a little boy..."
Do the dots connect to "Willie"....is my child he is my father....
Is it Graham?
