Parched Ribs of Sand

Since I'm a visually oriented person in my mind's eye I can see those 
"parched ribs" as mounds of sand on the beach that are created by the tides.

It's great how everyone has their own "take" on Joni's lyrics - that's part 
of the magic, they are so open to interpretation.

We can look at them literally or figuratively, from both sides now.
