Both great takes. I've always loved this set of lyrics and always took it to
mean that with: "now I am surf rising," she, as a person, is pretty
substantial and powerful within this relationship. Her identity is not lost
to his identity and his needs.
With "parched ribs of sand at his side" I see the lows in a relationship
where you are not sure where you are. Are you feeling strong and confident?
Or are you just some inconsequential speck of sand clinging to his side?
Jackson Browne has a great line about lovers and one's sense of self in
relationships that works well with my interpretation. From "Sky Blue and
Black," it goes: "where the touch of a lover ends and the soul of the friend
begins, there's a need to be separate and a need to be one and a struggle
neither wins."
"Strange Boy" and its many images gets a top slot in my list of favorite Joni
images.
