Thanks, Ashara for more input. The story James provides in the 60 Minutes II
transcript comports more closely with the original story most of all us
remember hearing back in the 70s. I recall the earlier article I mentioned
being more generally about the Simon family, rather than James specifically
(although it did purport to quote him on this subject), and I think it
appeared in Vanity Fair. However, here is a link to another article from
MOJO, where James again seems to be downplaying it a bit
http://www.james-taylor.com/text/mojo9-97.txt Here is an excerpt:

"Meanwhile Taylor began to undergo some personal reversals - mainly
escalating bouts of depression - dropping out of the Milton Academy Boarding
School in Massachucetts. 'Probably typical adolescent stuff,' says James,
'but people around me put me into a mental hospital for about nine months.'
(Sister Kate and brother Livingston would also spend short intervals at
McLean Hospital, where Ray Charles had once gone to detox.) Sprung by a pal
named Dave Barry, Taylor fled with his record collection....."

This interview also states that he kicked his "remaining addictions" to
"alcohol and methodone" in 1985.
