hi everyone:
i was listening to "night ride home" this morning (thinking
that it's not one of my usual morning albums -- as people
have written, LOTC and Clouds are so perfect for that),
but in the snow and sleet i wanted to hear "come in from
the cold".
ANYWAY, i had to stop what i was doing when "two grey rooms"
came on. what a powerful, aching, beautiful song. it
sounds like the musical equivalent of deja vu--eerie, reminiscent,
a bit sad. and it's been playing in my head all day.
i was thinking at first that it seems like one of my favorite
"last songs" on joni's albums. but then i didn't know what
i meant by that. lyrically, it's such a small gem unto itself
that it doesn't seem to be the grand perfect epic ending that
"refuge of the roads" is for hejira (if there were to be a
category of "last songs" i think this is clearly her "best").
it doesn't, i mean, contribute to the WHOLE of NRH by actively
ending that album, thematically, sonically.
but -- it just seems perfect, so beautiful, so right to close
on that note.
i remember there was a thread a while ago about the best
first song on an album -- but i don't remember us going over
best or favorite "last songs". does anyone have a special
one? what are the reasons or qualities for thinking so?
-- emily, just feeling like tossing out some JC
