I've always taken it as drug reference. And the "throbbing light machine" the strobe
light effect brought on by some psychedelic drugs. Falling down a well, like Alice.
"tea leaf trance" seems in line with that. And orders from the king and queen, another
Alice In Wonderland reference, which was quite a popular book in the drug culture when
Joni wrote this.
