About three weeks ago, I had the pleasure to see Rufus Wainright
in concert. It was T-riffic!! He did most of his material from his new
album. My personal favorite was "THe Greek Song". He also did a cover of
his father's song, "ONe man guy" with Teddy Thompson singing lead on one
verse and his sister Martha singing lead on another. That song is also to my
surprise and joy is on the new album as well. Rufus made a joke that
Teddy's mother or his mother (i forget) thinks that Teddy should be Rufus's
boyfriend. I did think Teddy was a cute guy and he was (more importantly) a
consistant guitar player. This was one of the most warm shows I have seen in
a while. The musicianship was excellent and their was an excellent sense of
friendship between those onstage. Afterwards, my friends and I went to the
back door (hoping to meet Rufus). Teddy was outside and I embarrassed
myself with a question, "Do you have a boyfriend." He said no, and that he
wasn't gay sort of politely and with a grin. I felt like an ass, but that is
what i get for asking such a question. Rufus did come out to greet us,
signed some cds, posters, etc, I chewed his ear off for a bit, about how his
music supported me when I was coming out in the Summer of 98'and then he
retreated back into the theatre. Overall, it was a great night, topped off
with onion and spinach omlette at the South Street diner.
