Which may have been a very conscious effort on Joni's part...

I think it's like the line in Song For Sharon:

"But all I *really* want to do is - find another lover"

in which she speaks directly and to the point for an effect. I think in LIS she uses 
this same technique to convey that on one level, there's an undercurrent of what she 
percieves is happening with his friends, but on a pure GUT level she's saying that 
it's JUST NOT WORKING.

Now, there's the possibility that I'm over-reading or giving Joni too much credit, and 
that the line is stylistically a mistake, another "big boo-hoo", but Joni has proven 
to be much more brilliant than I, so I'll give her the benefit of the doubt! ;~)
